HURRICANE MELISSA REPORT FROM HAITI

Crossing into the flood zone of Petit Goave, Haiti, to bring relief (Sun, Nov 2nd)

Dear Friends,

Last week, while I was in Haiti, our team hunkered down at our school as Hurricane Melissa passed through the Caribbean. We are incredibly thankful that Haiti was not hit directly. Still, with Haiti’s fragile infrastructure, the heavy rains were enough to flood towns and take lives.

In the wake of the storm, we learned that many lives were lost in Petit Goâve, our nearest city, where we shop and run errands. Our first concern was for our teachers and students.

Tragically, our new 2nd-grade teacher’s home was completely flooded, and her family lost everything. She described watching children wash away by floodwaters and hearing families wailing in the dark. One of our preschoolers, Samson’s home was also flooded, but by grace, his family survived because they were awake and praying when the water rushed into their home.

Our team immediately rallied to gather clothes, supplies, and emergency funds. As soon as it was safe to enter into town, our school staff rallied together with shovels, buckets, and their helping hand to clean the mud and debris from our teacher’s home and yard. They even pitched in from their own limited means to bring her comfort and relief.

Today, after school, our team will go out again, this time to help little Samson’s family clean out his house. With wheelbarrows, shovels, buckets, and open hearts, they’ll be there to bring hands-on help and encouragement.

This is truly love in action. We are so proud of our Impact Int’l team in Fond Doux.

HURRICANE RELIEF FOR HAITI

LOVE IN ACTION

The moment we learned about what happened to our 2nd grade teacher’s home, we immediately gathered clothes, supplies, and essentials for her and her family.

Our school staff mobilized, coming with buckets, shovels, and helping hands to clean up our 2nd grade teacher’s home.

The floodwater was knee deep (as you can see from the stain on the wall). Our staff dove in with their hands and feet to clear the house of water, mud, and debris.

They formed a train to remove buckets of mud and debris away from the home. It took lots of team work. Everyone stayed until dark and still wanted to keep working!

Everyone ended the night with muddy feet but full hearts.
