Bringing Aid in Times of Famine

It’s been a crazy and intense few months for Haiti. We are seeing an influx of refugees coming from Port-au-Prince to seek safety and shelter in our area. But we continue to see great and encouraging results of our positive impact in the village of Fond Doux!

Here are the major updates from our most recent trip:

Meeting Needs During A Famine

In the midst of the ongoing riots and famine, our team was able to serve 600+ meals and aid a record 62 families in January with much needed food staples. The country’s political instability has continued to disrupt the supply chain, leading to outrageous food prices that many Haitians can’t afford to pay. These circumstances have caused many families to go several days without food. Armed with rice, beans, and oil, we trekked to both old and new families (which can average 10 to 15 people each) to help ease this burden. As large and desperate as these families are, it is not uncommon for them to share their blessings with other less fortunate neighbors. People who have been the recipients of this generosity include the refugees who have fled Port Au Prince to escape the gang violence engulfing that city. 

We want to give a special thank you for the many donors who gave to this need up until our departure for Haiti. This would not have been possible without your help.

Leadership Academy Update

Progress with the Leadership Academy project continues as we surveyed the land and marked its borders. Our team was also able to meet with various local construction firms to research the best building methods for our school. Word has spread rapidly in the Fond Doux village of our vision and the locals couldn’t be more excited about it!

Christmas in Haiti

Bringing Christmas to Haiti

We held our annual Christmas party for the village of Fond Doux this past January. This is no doubt the most special event for many people who have faced severe adversity in the past year. Like many families in America, this is an event that allows us to gather together and reconnect with many of our Haitian friends and families. We were able to sponsor and serve a home-cooked meal with enough for all to eat until full (with plenty leftovers to share with others!).

Don’t worry, we didn’t forget the gifts! Every guest at our party received at least four hand-wrapped gifts with brand new items (something unaffordable for most living in Fond Doux). But, the greatest gift we gave that night was a chance for these people to share in an evening of laughter, a welcomed respite from the day-to-day worries they face.
